How To Request an Account on Opportunity
September 2nd, 2009 by sheehan
We’d like to keep the bureaucracy to a minimum. We need only three things to create an Opportunity account:
1. An email from a full-time faculty member, containing
2. Information on the research to be done, particularly if it is grant-funded or going towards a grant proposal, and
3. Expected account termination date.
Just contact us at researchcomputing@neu.edu and we’ll create an account within a business day.

Disk Quota Increase
August 28th, 2009 by sheehan
Home directories on Opportunity used to be limited to 2 GB of storage. The personal quota has been increased to 5 GB.
The scratch_global partition has been increased from 300 GB to 800 GB.
Please bear in mind that Opportunity is a computational cluster, not an archive. While the home directories are backed up, scratch directories are not. Any files in scratch directories more than 30 days old may be deleted without notice.

Opportunity Cluster Upgraded
August 17th, 2009 by rajiv
The Opportunity Cluster has been upgraded to the latest version of Rocks cluster.
A new cluster head node has been built and all files restored from the old system to the new. We have increased the sizes of both the /home and /scratch_global partitions. All user logins and passwords remain the same. Please expect to receive a warning from your SSH client that “remote host identification has changed”, since new SSH host-keys were created for the new head node.
The following software packages have been installed and are available. Note that the current version of Rocks uses /share/apps for software, and many of the applications have links or startup shell scripts in /share/apps/bin.
- Rocks 5.2.2
- Lava 1.0
- Sun Grid Engine (SGE)
- Bio-Informatics Suite
- HPC Suite (Open MPI, MPICH, MPICH2, etc.)
- Viz
- Matlab Simulink Suite 2009a
- NAMD 2.7b1
- Mathematica 7.0.1
- Maple 13
- Stata 10
- Amber 10
- CHARRM 35b1r1
- GCC suite rpm -qa 4.1.2-44
- Java 5.2
- Intel Fortran Compiler 11.0
We are still waiting for licenses and/or installation media for the current versions of several important software programs, since these packages need to be re-installed. These include:
- Gaussian
- Xilinx/ISE
- SAS
- Abaqus
- Ansys/Fluent
- Gambit
The Opportunity Cluster is a powerful and flexible platform, which means that it is necessarily complex. Please be patient with us as we correct any uncaught bugs. Please contact researchcomputing@neu.edu with any problems or issues.
